At UW we are up to over 300 user devices and 500+ including lab PC's

Hi Garrett! In response to your question "Do you also back up cloud storage like OneDrive or SharePoint or trust/rely on the cloud provider? What are the considerations over cyber crime on these platforms vs traditional file shares?". We have applications dedicated to being able to sync data to and from those cloud repositories, such as Cloud Sync, but our strictly backup applications for cloud instances are for Active Backup for Microsoft 365 and Active Backup for Gsuite.(Google Workspace)When referring to security as it pertains to cyber crime, there are a myriad of ways to insulate oneself from attack on a Synology NAS, such as the use of IP blocking through auto block, 2 factor authentication, as well as means of encrypting and securing your data locally to mitigate risk of these attacks.

Hello Todd! In response to your question, "How many business backup individual computers vs just network shares?", It depends on what they are looking to accomplish with their backups. You can backup either with Active Backup for Business.
Rachel Torrence, Synology
01:04:37
As far as how many devices Synology can back up goes, different units have different backup capabilities so it will depend on the unit you are purchasing. If you have more than 500 devices/vm’s/ or users you are backing up, please contact us for a consultation.

What rule of thumb do you use for the amount of storage required for each device?

Hi Nina! In response to your question, "Do you support backing up Oracle Virtual Machines?" Unfortunately no, we do not have any software that backs up Oracle virtual machines directly. We are happy to be a backup target for iSCSI/NFS/SMB based backups though. The current supported OS for backup through Active Backup for Business can be found here:https://kb.synology.com/en-af/DSM/help/ActiveBackup/activebackup_business_requireandlimit?version=6

Does this solution apply to more than PCs? E.g.,Back up data on servers, etc.
Rachel Torrence, Synology
01:09:17
Hi Lisa! It’s really going to depend on the deployment in the environment, are these mostly devices that are working of network shares on their own or are they also storing databases or other work related files that need to be backed up and will be modified/added to in the future? You can reasonably deduct any empty space on most work stations.
Rachel Torrence, Synology
01:11:09
Thanks for your question, Susan! Yes it includes physical servers which would be treated with the same process as with PCs, and in addition file servers can be backed up that act as Exchange or SQL servers, and virtual machines as well.
Sergey Buduchin
01:11:28
What is the total user base being served by this solution?
Robert Hendricks - UW
01:11:30
At UW we backup all three options, PC's, physical servers and VM's.
Sergey Buduchin
01:12:37
Or a computer/client base if this was the real metric to calculate a solution…
Sergey Buduchin
01:15:22
Yes. I am interested to understand how did original scope was calculated. - Is it per user, or per GB ,or per client node?
Robert Hendricks - UW
01:17:47
We had a rough idea of the number of devices. and how much unique data each user has. deduplication saves TONS of space. we then sized roughly to those numbers + margin we opted to have.
Rachel Torrence, Synology
01:19:39
Hi Sergey! You will want to consider a mix of both how many workstations and VM’s you are looking to back up, and figure out how much total storage you are looking for to store those backups.Feel free to reach out via inquiry if you have more specific questions but this link can give you an idea of what you might need: https://kb.synology.com/en-us/DSM/tutorial/How_to_select_a_Synology_product_for_Active_Backup_for_Business

01:19:41
@Robert Hendricks - how did you assess the amount of duplicate data?
Ryan MacDonald
01:20:19
Robert, did you consider building your own file servers and using an open source system like TrueNAS or Proxmox BS?
Rachel Torrence, Synology
01:20:35
Thank you so much for joining us! We hope you will take a few minutes for fill out our post-webinar survey for a chance to win a Synology DS220+ NAS. You can find the survey here: https://sy.to/educause0729

We went based on our techs experience of migrating user data to replacement laptops and desktops. and went with an "Average" of user profile move sizes.
Robert Hendricks - UW
01:22:09
we seem to use less than our original estimates because of deduplication.
